Parisian Chic

I’m writing this from The Shirt Company’s exhibition stand at Pret a Porter Paris. Working here means I’ve had a lot of time to check out what’s new on the scene and to people watch to my heart’s content. I’ve only ever been to France once as a child and I don’t remember much about it so coming to Paris has been an illuminating experience for me. Although I’ve obviously always been aware of a certain French style – Parisian in particular – it’s quite a different thing seeing these women in real life.

For starters I’m amazed at how many women seem to dress in cliched ensembles like Breton stripes. But my overwhelming feeling is one of jealousy – of their figures and amazing wardrobes. I can’t quite put my finger on what makes their style so special but I think it also has a lot to do with their tanned physique and general attitude to clothing. It really is all about blazers, skinny jeans, cropped trousers and rolling up the cuffs on your shirts.

This trip I’ve been reading Donna’s book Parisian Chic by Ines de la Fressange and am about to buy French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano. As we travel back to London tomorrow (after a good shopping spree and spa trip in the morning) I have a feeling I’ll want to take a little bit of Parisian style back with me to inject into my wardrobe, and my outlook.
